If you’re a fan of soul music (and realistically who isn’t) then we’ve found a tour for you.
Based on the 1987 book by Roddy Doyle (which was also the basis for the 1991 film) – The Commitments UK Tour is a new, energetic, fun-filled tribute to soul and the (mostly hilarious) trials and tribulations of attempting to keep a band together.
The production played the West End from 2013-2015 and is now on UK Tour until May 2017.
All the songs you know are here, kicking off with Proud Mary, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Think, Uptight, Treat Her Right and Try A Little Tenderness to name but a few.
Kevin Kennedy (who you may remember as Curly Watts in Coronation Street) plays “Jimmy’s Da” in a large cast of 20, all of whom despite not being household names – have impressive credits of their own. This cast has clearly been chosen for their talent as not only can these all rounders act, sing and dance extremely well – but they play the live music too.
It’s the most convincing performance you’ll see of actor musicians playing live without affecting any other elements of their performance. As an audience member you are completely sucked in, you almost forget that they are actors on a stage. With perfect Irish accents throughout, this cast is the real deal.
The set is as impressive as you would expect – authentic scenery and intelligently designed to provide a great feel to all the locations within the show.
The production really gets going when the band are together – for music lovers the show seamlessly manages to weave the presentation of the music along with the thoroughly entertaining story-line.
Hilarious moments are sprinkled throughout. From the more subtle – a janitor that uses a hose to simulate rain before immediately returning as a janitor with a mop – to the downright outrageous. Mickah (played by Sam Fordham) the band’s new security, helps to bring act one to a hilarious close and is a joy to watch throughout.
The audience, on a monday evening no less, were on their feet as the cast whipped up a superb atmosphere. This show comes highly recommended from us and you should catch it where you can.
The Commitments UK Tour plays the Regent Theatre, Stoke-on-Trent until Saturday 19th November. To book tickets visit www.atgtickets.com/stoke. For more details of future venues visit: thecommitmentsontour.co.uk.
