The most delightful pantomime is currently playing Stoke-on-Trent’s Regent Theatre, who have once again provided an outstanding seasonal production. This time it’s Aladdin – but once again it’s fresh, it’s different and frankly it’s one of the best pantomimes in the country.
Welcoming back familiar faces – not least stoke favourite (and local) Jonathan Wilkes and “honourary stokie” Christian Patterson who have once again (magnificently) co-directed the production. Kai Owen (Abanazar), Simon Nehan (Emperor Ming), Amanda Coutts (Scheherazade) and Yazmin Wood (Princess Jasmine) complete the lineup of familiar names to this theatre’s Panto but they’re back for very good reason. This is a dream team.
Brand new for this year is the use of spectacular 3D imagery that literally adds a whole new dimension to the production and provide surprisingly good effects. It’s a stunning addition to proceedings.
With a great story, great effects and an even better cast. This is the perfect panto. You will laugh from start to finish.
Dance routines are on point, the script is nicely balanced, all characters are so strong and entertaining. There’s nothing not to like. Where some pantomimes this year have attempted to raise the bar by going over the top – this one sticks to it’s roots and provides a pantomime masterclass.
The Wilkes Academy provide the ensemble including groups of young people who are all unbelievably well trained, exceptional performers.
Special effects don’t stop with 3D either. A magnificent flying carpet scene is one of the many sprinklings of magic across the production.
A total highlight though, is the “If I were not in pantomime” scene. Wonderfully worked and ends in extended rapturous applause.
Wilkes is at home in Stoke but he’s at home on the Regent Theatre stage too. Long may he continue to bring festive cheer to Stoke-on-Trent. But a special mention has to go to Christian Patterson, it is difficult to think of a dame that compares. He is hilarious, lovable and a sheer pleasure to watch. Without doubt one of the best in the business. Trust us, he has you literally from his entrance. A true star.
This is the one to see. It can’t be topped.
