A new musical based on the music of Take That has launched and more than lives up to the hype.
Tim Firth has written a beautiful, thoughtful and relatable script that is sending audiences from tears to pure joy. Embarking on a new UK tour, this inspiring show has already been extended by one year.
It’s the story of an ordinary group of young women growing up with Top Of The Pops and obsessing over their favourite boy band. They thought they’d be that way forever but fast forward 25 years and things have not worked out how anybody planned. A competition win to watch a long overdue reunion brings the girls back together and this time it’s for keeps.
The beauty of the show, and what was so lovely to watch, was that the audience members could recognise so many parts of the characters within themselves.
Unlike a standard jukebox musical, the back catalogue of Take That has been intelligently and carefully intertwined with a powerful script. The majority of songs form the perfect backdrop for the action unfolding on stage – and the odd one that doesn’t fit perfectly simply allows for a fantastic time!
The boys from the band (the winners of the hit BBC TV talent show Let It Shine) were quality throughout, almost narrating the show through song. The girls are all sharp, funny and deliver some lovely moments with incredible authenticity. There is a point where the younger girls become older, and it is magical theatre craft.
Directed by Kim Gavin and Jack Ryder, this is theatre at its highest level. Some moments that they have created will leave you in awe. All cast were superb and deserving of their own mention.
Book your ticket and prepare to be blown away (whether you’re a Take That fan or not) by the best new musical this year by far. From the impressive set to the live band and everyone who made the show run so smoothly – this is the one to watch.
The audience roared with delight at the end, with a tremendous standing ovation and deservedly so. It is the one to watch.
The Band plays at the Liverpool Empire until Saturday 3rd February before continuing it’s UK tour. To book tickets visit www.atgtickets.com/liverpool or for more details visit: The Band Official Website.
