Footloose – UK Tour
Following a successful 2016 tour, Sell a Door Productions have brought back Footloose the musical for a further run across the U.K. With some familiar faces, the same quality set and a sprinkling of new life, this version is their best yet.
The show stars Maureen Nolan who reprises her role as Vi and Gareth Gates who returns as Willard for the entirety of this tour.
For theatre goers that have been hiding under a rock for the past 30 years, Footloose is a modern musical theatre classic based on the 80’s film of the same name. It follows the story of Ren (Joshua Dowen) and his move from glamorous Chicago to small-town Bomont where dancing and all things exciting have been banned for the last five years.
Notably in this production the cast members all play instruments live on stage accompanying themselves throughout the action. It has to be said that the cast have mastered the ability to do this without dampening the energy on stage. Whilst the production is not as heavily dance orientated as other versions of Footloose, this one is as fun as it is impressive to watch.
There is no weak link in this hard working cast which is rich in talent – but there were still some exceptional highlights.
Laura Sillett in the role of Rusty threatened to steal the show – oozing stage presence, whilst on stage love interest Willard (Gareth Gates) was thoroughly entertaining and completed a love story that was over-flowing with chemistry.
Hannah Price puts in a strong and accomplished performance as she continues the role of Ariel, having made her professional debut in this role last year.
All your favourites are in – Let’s hear it for the boy is always a crowd favourite, Holding out for a hero, Mama Says, Almost Paradise and Footloose the title track within what must be one of theatre’s best musical scores.
This production has gone up a notch this year and is worth seeing more than ever. It’s also very much worth returning to if you have already seen the production thanks to it’s notable improvements – which will mean you enjoy it even more second time round.
The Mega-Mix at the end is a welcome finale and had a thoroughly entertained audience on their feet.
Footloose plays York Grand Opera House until Saturday 6th May – to book tickets visit atgtickets.com.
The show is touring until September 2017 and full tour details can be found on the Footloose UK Tour Website.
