I Capture The Castle

The people of Bolton and the North West have the opportunity to see a superb new production in the making until 6th May.

I Capture The Castle – the new musical comes to Bolton Octagon, a theatre usually in the round but transformed into a more standard front facing auditorium.

A most quirky family have fallen on hard times, despite still renting the castle they love. Their wishes come true when an American family become their new landlords and love blossoms between the younger members of the family. It becomes complicated very quickly which makes for a very entertaining series of events.

Based on the novel by Dodie Smith (who cemented her place in history with 101 Dalmatians), this musical has a great script and a truly appealing score to accompany it – the work of Teresa Howard and Steven Edis respectively.

The style is oddly over-dramatic and quite bizarre in short bursts, particularly in the movement. At first it takes some adjusting to but once you get used to it – it adds to the overall humour and represents the family early on in the show quite well.

The show really comes to life when we meet Mrs Cotton and Leda (Julia St John and Shona White) perform a hilarious duet about men. A very amusing scene, performed confidently by two excellent actors.

Ben Watson, playing James the father (an author with severe writing block) is also hilarious throughout.

A strong overall cast give this musical what it deserves. It’s extremely entertaining – and I don’t think it’s the last time you’ll be hearing about this show.

I Capture The Castle plays the Octagon Theatre Bolton until 6th May 2017. Buy tickets on the Official Website.
