Mamma Mia – UK Tour
Mamma Mia! the smash hit musical has arrived at the Regent Theatre, Stoke. Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, and music and lyrics by Benny Anderson & Björn Ulvaeus’, Mamma Mia! guarantees to bring all the fun and joy that you could possibly wish for from a night out to the theatre.
Act One was off to an upbeat and fairly fast paced start. From the overture, the audience were already highly enthusiastic, cheering and clapping, eagerly anticipating the performers arrival to the stage.
Young bride-to-be Sophie Sheridan, played by Phoebe Roberts, began the story by posting some risqué invitations to three men, Sam, Bill and Harry, who all have equal potential of being her long-lost father, a secret in which she discovered by accidentally coming across her mums old diary.
Unbeknownst to them, and to her unsuspecting mother Donna Sheridan, her plans to discover the truth before her big day transpires in a way that she never thought possible. And so the story began, Sophie and her sprightly friends, Lisa and Ali, and Donna and the dynamos, all reunited for the Greek wedding of the century and we began to see the much-loved story unfold. A blast from the past sends Donna into despair when she encounters all three of her old love interests at her home…at the same time and has no idea why.
There was incredibly high energy from the audience that stayed consistent throughout and carried through to Act Two. At times, it often felt more like being at a lively concert, especially at the end, when the performers invited the audience to get on their feet and sing along to a medley of recognisable hit ABBA songs alongside the cast.
One thing that makes this production a musical sensation, is the variety of musical numbers that appear in the show. To accompany the more lighthearted scenes in the story, there was the younger, more playful songs, such as ‘Honey Honey’ and ‘Dancing Queen’ and then there is the more emotional and mature songs such as, ‘The Winner Takes It All’ and ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’, proving that there really is something for everyone.
The set was fairly simplistic and didn’t vary too much throughout, meaning that the show heavily relied on the actors to deliver engaging and energetic performances, which they were incredibly successful in doing. The staging contained some projection used for a backdrop and a revolving building placed in the centre of the stage that exposed both the outside and the inside of the Greek taverna, that is also a prominent feature in the film and was cleverly utilised by the performers throughout the show. Donna and the dynamos stole the show and their connection and friendship on stage, seemed authentic and genuine. Nicky Swift as the self proclaimed ‘lone wolf’ Rosie, and Helen Anker as
cheeky three-time divorcee Tanya, were highly comical throughout and had the audience roaring with laughter in their raunchy and mischievous musical numbers, ‘Does Your Mother Know’ and ‘Take A Chance On Me.’
Sara Poyzer as mother of the bride, Donna Sheridan, was brilliant throughout and had a likeliness to the original character in the film. Her presence and charisma lit up the stage and her rendition of ‘The Winner Takes It All’ was incredibly powerful and full of emotion. It really showcased her talents as a performer and received a well-deserved ruckus of applause from the audience.
Mamma Mia! Really is a feel-good global phenomenon, and is something that could be watched time and time again and never grow old! The energetic choreography, glitzy over-the-top costumes, and unforgettable catchy songs, transform the stage into a fun filled musical extravaganza. It is easy to see why this production has such a large following and is loved by so many people.
Whether it is for a night out for the girls, or an evening with the family, this production has something for everyone and is definitely, One To Take A Chance On!
