‘The Marriage Of Kim K’ To Start On 3rd July At 53two For Manchester Fringe Festival

Kim Kardashian’s love life has been set to Mozart to create a satirical musical called The Marriage of Kim K at 53two, as part of the sixth Greater Manchester Fringe 3-4, 10-11, 15-17 July 2017.

In 2011, Kim Kardashian televised her fairytale wedding to NBA basketball star Kris Humphries… 72 days later she filed for divorce. In this brisk, clever and ambitious take on Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, this spectacular Kardashian failure is just one of three iconic marriages to comically disintegrate on stage.

Leoe & Hyde are a northern musical-duo who live and work together in central Manchester, writing musicals for the twenty-first century. Inspired by Kim Kardashian, they share the process of creating a musical and putting it on at the fringe in a series called Keeping Up With Leoe & Hyde.

Stephen Hyde said: “It’s about Kim Kardashian and… it’s based on The Marriage of Figaro. It’s taking the structure and the music of Mozart’s opera and turning it into something contemporary. Basically transforming it from an opera into a musical.”

The idea for the musical started two years ago when Leoe Mercer was sitting in Takk, the coffee shop in the Northern Quarter: “There was a guy next to me and he had some music on his desk. I asked him what it was and it was The Marriage of Figaro. That planted that in my head. Then a few weeks later I came across a book called Kim Kardashian’s Marriage, which was a book of poetry.

“Then I was watching West Side Story the musical and boom! The Marriage of Kim K. It was one of those dreamy moments. At first I was rewriting it on my own and then we got a composer on board and Stephen was the director. It’s now two years on and Stephen is also doing the music. So we have some really cool new music for the show.”

Leoe said they fell in love with 53two, the old Bauer Millett car showroom in Manchester, when they held auditions there.

“It’s such a dramatic space, an edgy space. It really fits what we are about. You have this old thing and make it into a new thing.”

Stephen said: “It’s got an intimacy to it. It reminds me of the Cavern club in Liverpool. It’s a good vibe.”

Stephen appears in The Marriage of Kim K with his real-life girlfriend Amelia, arguing about what to watch on television – The Marriage of Figaro or Keeping Up with the Kardashians?

Leoe said: “My job is to watch them as a couple and write them into my play. They met when we did the first production of this last year. They were just two random characters. When I realised they were in a relationship and we could make it about them… reality theatre.”

Three squabbling couples, three styles of music, and the biggest problem of them all: how to love in a world of bitter contrasts? Each world has a distinct sound: clear and catchy for Stephen and Amelia, slick and electronic for the Kardashians, and grandly traditional for Figaro.

All three combine in a show-stopping final number, which sees the three worlds meeting, and then lovingly tearing each other apart.
The Marriage of Kim K is accompanied by a live genre-bending string quartet Echo Chamber, who recently launched at the Manchester International Festival’s FIMH mixing classical with Kanye West (Kim’s husband), and have just finished a sell-out solo tour.

The Marriage of Kim will be performed at 53two on 3-4, 10-11, 15-17 July 2017 – before it goes to Edinburgh Fringe.
