Celebrating the venue’s 25th anniversary the New Victoria Theatre, Woking is excited to announce the new season, and our brand new What’s On magazine design, with yet more incredible productions to fill everyone’s diary over the coming months.
There’s no need to travel River Deep, Mountain High to see a record-breaking West End smash hit this season because The Commitments,based on the BAFTA award-winning film classic from Roddy Doyle, comes to Woking 17 – 22 April, starring Coronation Street legend Kevin Kennedy.
Hot on the heels of a record breaking and critically acclaimed run in the West End, Funny Girl starring the triumphant Natasha J Barnes as Fanny Brice alongside Darius Campbell as Nick Arnstein is set to stun Woking 24 – 29 April – nothing is gonna to rain on the parade of this stunning show!
Beat the drums ‘cause here comes Strictly Come Dancing winner Joanne Clifton as the adorable Millie in Thoroughly Modern Millie, 8 – 13 May. With great songs and spectacular dance routines this hilarious six-time Tony Award winning musical will have toes tapping all week long.
Following a critically acclaimed season at the National Theatre, the first collaboration between the National Theatre and Bristol Old Vic sees an innovative re-imaging of Charlotte Brontë’s masterpiece Jane Eyre, featuring an incredible cast and inspired set, 29 May – 3 June.
Nothing shouts summer like the vibrant night-life deep in the heart of St Tropez which plays host to the most dazzling drag queens in La Cage aux Folles. Starring Broadway legend Adrian Zmed and West End wonder John Partridge, have The Best of Times with this ‘simply amazing’ (EILE Magazine) musical between 6 – 10 June.
What’s more, the one that you want is in town from 10 – 15 July with the original high-school classic Grease. Watch our irresistible bad boy Danny and sugar-sweet Sandy fall in love as you, once again, become Hopelessly Devoted to all your favourite songs sung by The Wanted star Tom Parker, Danielle Hope and Louisa Lytton as Rizzo.
Drama lovers have more to enjoy this summer too. Join the other 7 million people who have lived to tell the tale of The Woman In Black, the acclaimed ghost story horror from Susan Hill, 11 – 15 April. Then see double BAFTA award winner Edward Fox OBE in a joyous stage play in celebration of John Betjeman, Sand in the Sandwiches, 16 – 17 June, before putting on your detective hat to see whether your can unravel Ruth Rendell’s classic mystery thriller, A Judgement in Stone, 26 June – 1 July.
Other musicals this season include the hilarious musical magazine Shout! Celebrating everything that made the 1960s great, starring 80s icon Sonia, 16 – 20 May. Whilst in September we’ll be making sure you have the Time Of ‘Your’ Life when a brand new production of Dirty Dancing dances into Woking, 5 – 9 September. Then sing Go, Go, Go Joseph McElderry when the X Factor golden boy dons the coat of many colours in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s much-loved Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, 12 – 16 September. Then prepare for everyone’s favourite kooky family as they arrive in the UK premiere of The Addams Family musical comedy, 26 – 30 September, starring Samantha Womack as Morticia and Les Dennis as Uncle Festa.
You’ll think we’re having a laugh when you hear about all the comedy on offer this season. The sidesplittingly funny Jimmy Carr can’t keep away this summer, 30 April & 6 August, whilst the night definitely won’t be light on laughs when Sean Lock: Keep It Light comes on 2 May. Then we welcome the unmistakable Russell Brand for the first time in 10 years, 3 May. Enjoy Shakespeare’s 37 plays in 97 minutes courtesy of Reduced Shakespeare Company, 23 May; followed by the “showbiz legend” Count Arthur Strong, 24 May. Britain’s Got Talent finalist Steve Hewlett demonstrates comedy ventriloquism at it’s finest too in the Rhoda McGaw Theatre, 18 August.
Music fans are in for a real treat this season. You don’t have to travel to Margate to see Chas & Dave who are coming to Woking, 21 June; whilst Beverley Knight will be giving us a night to remember, 24 June. Joe McElderry will be showcasing his new single and plenty of show tunes, 26 July; followed by possibly the hardest working Rock ‘n’ Roll band around, Showaddywaddy, who return on 28 July.
But it doesn’t end there. Reminisce with a range of uplifting shows celebrating the best music from yesteryear. The popular Illegal Eagles, 4 May, and award-winning The Carpenters Story, 5 May, return followed by the ever-popular and UK no.1 Rock ‘n’ Roll variety show That’ll Be The Day, 21 May. Audiences will be Dancing On The Ceiling with Motown’s Greatest Hits: How Sweet It Is, 15 June. Miller Plays The Musicals will be donating all profits to the Royal British Legion, 18 June; before the world’s foremost tribute to ELO, The ELO Experience, take to the stage on 22 June.
Non-stop nostalgia is provided by Let’s Twist Again, 20 July; then enjoy the biggest 70s party ever from Dancing Queen The Concert, 8 July. The world’s most authentic Queen tribute Mercury, 30 August, will rock Woking before we celebrate the Queen and King of Country, Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton, in Islands In The Stream, 1 September. Then feel like you’re at a Bee Gees concert with Nights On Broadway – The Bee Gees Story, 3 September.
Looking for something for the little ones? Bring them to their first ballet thanks to the hugely popular My First Ballet series from English National Ballet with Cinderella, 26 – 27 May. Or grab your broomstick and your pointy hat to join Witch and her cat in Room on the Broom, 21 – 23 July.
Or for something a little less child friendly, the men are back after popular demand in Dreamboys, 23 June.
Legally Blonde, the West End and Broadway smash hit heads to Woking starring Rita Simons, 9 – 14 October; whilst Hollywood legends Ali MacGraw and Ryan O’Neal star in Love Letters, 16 – 21 October. Dance fans are also in for a real treat thanks to the ever-musical Richard Alston Dance Company, 3 October, world champion and Strictly favourites Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace in Tango Moderno, 31 October – 4 November, and Northern Ballet’s The Little Mermaid choreographed by David Nixon OBE, 21 – 25 November. New Victoria Theatre is lucky to once again present Glyndebourne Tour 2017, 7 – 11 November before we welcome Shane Richie in this year’s magical pantomime adventure Robin Hood, 9 December 2017 – 7 January 2018.
