Millie Dillmount is a small-town girl with big-city dreams. She leaves Kansas behind and moves to New York in the hope of finding a rich man to marry.
Set in the Roaring Twenties – an era of jazz, alcohol prohibition and the flapper girls- the Tony Award winning Thoroughly Modern Millie is a feel-good musical full of high energy jazz numbers and plenty of pizazz.
Joanne Clifton, professional dancer from Strictly Come Dancing, stars as Millie and created an immediate rapport with the audience. She was outstanding. Her dancing was, of course, incredible and her characterisation of Millie was both hilarious and charming.
Michelle Collins (EastEnders, Coronation Street) stars alongside Clifton as the evil hotel owner Mrs Meers who is secretly selling the girls that lodge with her into the white slave trade. Collins performs strongly as the comic ‘baddy’ (even earning herself some pantomime-esque booing at the final curtain call) and has some fun numbers in which she can show case her vocal talents.
Act One seemed a little slow, perhaps because the dialogue and musical numbers didn’t lend themselves as well to the comic timing and fast pace the cast are capable of. The story seemed to get a little lost in the ‘broadway flamboyance’ of it all.
Act Two felt much more triumphant and enjoyable. The last twenty minutes in particular provides back to back comedy gold. Everything that Broadway is famous for.
Very much the star of the second act, Graham MacDuff in the latter half delivers an absolute stand out comic performance as Mr Trevor Graydon – leaving the audience in hysterics at a role wonderfully played. Sam Barrett also steps up in the action at around the same time – a talented performer who played love interest Jimmy Smith
Thoroughly Modern Millie is an enjoyable performance that, whilst can feel slow at times, culminates in a hilarious finale and houses some very talented performers.
The final third of the show is absolutely 5-star all the way and I can’t help but feel this show will get stronger at each venue that’s it tours.
